The Orchestra Program at Highlands Junior School involves nearly 100 students, in three different orchestras, from beginners through the Chamber Orchestra, our top performing group. We also have an ever-increasingly active booster club, called the Highlands Junior School String Society. The Society plans social activities for the orchestra, as well as providing scholarships for students wishing to attend summer orchestra camps.
FAQ’s Q. What instruments are taught in Orchestra? A. Violin, Viola, Cello and Bass
Q. Do I have to buy an instrument? A. I recommend renting an instrument from a reputable dealer (Lisle Violin Shop or H&H Music). Do not go to pawn shops, or ebay! The music dealers in our area work hard to make instruments affordable.
Q. Does the school have instruments which can be used? A. Yes, Highlands Junior School has a limited number of instruments that may be used for a small fee, but are reserved for those who really can’t afford any other way to have an instrument. (Criteria is to be on Free/Reduced Lunch)
Q. Are there a lot of after school rehearsals? A. No. I try to limit them to as few as possible, especially for the first year.
Q. Will we actually perform for an audience? A. Yes, we will have several performances throughout the year.
Q. Should I go right out and get an instrument? A. No. Wait until I have talked to you personally, and sized your child for the correct instrument.
Q. What are the future prospects for my student in orchestra? A. Short-term, students will progress through the groups here at Highlands Junior School and into high school. After that, university orchestras are always looking for good string players, and will grant scholarships to students who will just be in the orchestra, and not necessarily “major” in music. Many communities have orchestras in which advanced high school students, as well as adults perform. Additionally, studies have shown that students who learn a string instrument tend to perform significantly better on standardized tests than those who have no music training.
Q. Can I participate in athletics and be in orchestra? A. Absolutely. I have basketball, football, and tennis players, as well as track and any other athlete you can think of, participating in orchestra. I have also taught at the High School level, and the same is true there.
Q. What costs, outside of the instrument itself, are involved in orchestra? A. Initially, students need a “uniform”. More information on that will be available at the beginning of the school year. Also, students are required to purchase the beginner’s book and a few incidentals, depending on which instrument they choose to play.
Sincerely, Stuart Eisen
