Welcome to the Alternative Learning Center!

The Alternative Learning Program is just that—an alternative—for
students who do not feel comfortable in or are not succeeding in the traditional high school environment. The program offers students the opportunity to work with caring teachers and proceed through their
high school classes in a relaxed, student-centered environment that
helps ensure success. Applications are available from the high school counselors or the ALP office.

Students choose the Alternative Learning Program for a variety of
reasons: a desire for individualized schedules; pregnancy or teenage parenthood responsibilities; difficulties at home that hinder successful progress at school; and more. Whatever the reason, ALP offers the encouragement and a personalized format to help students earn their
high school diploma and reach their educational and personal goals.

Our goals...

The Alternative Learning Program has set the following goals:

  • All students will feel good about school.
  • All students will graduate.
  • Alternative Learning Program students will become productive citizens.

Special programs, services, and activities...

  • Flexible schedules to help meet special needs
  • On-site day care for children of students attending GCCISD schools

A message from our director...

The Alternative Learning Program was started in 1980 to meet the needs of students who had experienced little educational success in traditional school settings. Some exciting changes have occurred since that time.
The format has evolved from one that provided a limited curriculum to a broader-based, computer-assisted, highly technological instructional program. In the fall of 1997, the program moved from Kilgore Center to the newly renovated West Town Instructional Center. The on-site day
care for children of students has expanded. Students learn in an environment that includes flexible scheduling and a smaller, more
personal atmosphere.

Come visit ALP and see success every day!

Sincerely,

Michelle Verdun
