Welcome to Austin Elementary!

Mission and Goals...

We, the staff of Stephen F. Austin Elementary, accept the responsibility for providing a safe, orderly environment for learning. We believe in every student's ability to learn and realize success. In order to educate the "whole child," we will implement well-balanced educational curriculum that will help each child function in our multi-cultural society.

We developed this mission based on the following beliefs:

      -All children can learn.

      -All children are unique.

-All children desire and need a secure environment.

-All children need opportunities to learn and be successful.

In conjunction with these beliefs, we developed the following goals for our students...

  • 90 percent of all students at Stephen F. Austin Elementary School will demonstrate the competency needed to master the reading, writing, science, and math sections of the Texas Assessment of Knowledge & Skills test by the end of the 2007-2008 school year.
  • Average daily attendance percentages for Stephen F. Austin Elementary School will continue to exceed the state goal of 94 percent.

Special Programs...

Austin Elementary School has a wide variety of programs designed to meet the diverse needs of our 855 students (62% White, 23% Hispanic, 13% African-American, and 3% Other) from kindergarten through the fifth grade.  We offer gifted and talented classes, special education resource classes, and therapy for students with dyslexia or speech impairments. In addition, we offer Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE), the Accelerated Reader Computer Program, a balanced literacy approach to reading and writing, SILC and PASS classes, and a school-wide discipline program.

Facts about our school...

Built in 1996, our new Stephen F. Austin Elementary School stands on 24.21 acres, with a square footage of 90,000. The school was designed with suggestions from a committee of Austin parents and staff. Their goal was to effectively meet the needs of today's children. Our mascot is the Alligator. Our school colors are red and white.

Message from the principal...

Our Austin slogan, "Hand in Hand We Can," exemplifies the philosophy of our school family. The logo shows two adults, signifying the family and our staff, holding the hands of a child.  The concept of offering the optimum
educational opportunity for a student must be a process supported and implemented through the efforts of both the school staff and the family. This process is activated through open communication, a positive outlook, and a loving environment.

Sincerely,

Laura Smith
Principal
