English as a Second Language (ESL)
Welcome to the Horace Mann ESL department home page!
Introducing the ESL Teachers Misty Avila: Ms. Avila is a graduate of Texas A&M University. She is currently teaching strudents assigned to ESL III Lab. Students in ESL III receive instruction in six mainstream classes and are scheduled with Ms. Avila one period per day to receive additional language arts instruction in preparation for TAAS testing. Ms. Avila serves as Department Chairperson for ESL. Julie Blaylock: Ms. Blaylock is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin. She has a Masters' degree from the University of North Texas and is currently working on her Ed.D in Curriculum and Instruction for Bilingual Education from the University of Houston. She is currently teaching language arts (English and reading) to students assigned to ESL I. Lucia Esaid: Ms. Esaid is a graduate of the University of Colombia and holds a Masters degree in ESL from Long Island University in New York. She is currently teaching math and science to students assigned to ESL I and ESL II. Carmen Campbell: Ms. Campbell plays an instrumental role to the ESL Department as the ESL and migrant program instructional aide. Ms. Campbell provides assistance to all students and teachers in the department.
DESCRIPTION OF ESL LEVELS ESL Speaking: Use one or two-word sentences. Listening: Understand only the simplest of instructions. Reading: Abilities range from preliterate to literate only in Spanish. Writing: Unable to write in English. Sometimes they can print their letters, but often they do not know cursive. ESL II: Limited Communication Skills Speaking: Use short, simple sentences. Listening: Have fairly good comprehension. Reading: Read between 1st to 5th grade levels in English. Writing: Poor writing skills. ESL III Lab: Very Functional Communication Skills Speaking: Use intelligible sentences and can often be very fluent. Listening: Understand almost everything except idioms and specialized vocabulary. Reading: Read between 3rd to 8th grade levels in English. Writing: Writing skills are slowly developing.
ESL I and II students receive two periods of language arts instruction a day. All content area subjects (math, science, social studies, English, reading) are taught within the ESL department. Electives are taught by mainstream teachers. ESL III Lab students receive one period of ESL instruction a day in an ESL Lab course. TAAS remediation is the major focus of the ESL III Lab. Students are enrolled in basic reading and basic English in the mainstream unless there is a scheduling conflict.
