Students at Horace Mann Junior School are expected to
follow the dress code policy as defined in the Goose Creek CISD Handbook
for Junior Schools. The district's dress code is established to teach
grooming and hygiene, instill discipline, prevent disruption, avoid
safety hazards, teach respect for authority, and reflect community
standards. Students should be dressed and groomed in a manner that is
clean and neat and that will not be a health or safety hazard or
disruptive element to themselves or others. In addition, the Goose
Creek CISD Board of Trustees has approved continuing the implementation
of a standardized dress code for Horace Mann students for the 2001-2002
school year. This dress code is implemented for the following reasons:
it allows students to participate in school without peer pressure
associated with clothing
it curtails student affiliation with gangs
it helps lower the cost of providing traditional clothing worn by
students
it makes identification of Horace Mann students easier
it creates a safer school environment
it helps build student self esteem and self discipline
Listed below are clothing and color combinations which follow the
Horace Mann standardized dress code:
solid white button-front shirt (long- or short-sleeved), solid
white turtleneck pullover shirt or sweatshirt, solid white polo or
crew-neck pullover shirt (NOTES -- Crew-neck undershirts, sleeveless
shirts, and scoop-neck shirts do not satisfy the criteria for
appropriate shirts. Solid is defined as free of ANY logos.)
solid kelly or hunter green button-front shirt, solid kelly or
hunter green turtleneck pullover shirt or sweatshirt, solid kelly or
hunter green polo pullover shirt (see NOTES above)
any approved Horace Mann spirit shirt
solid blue, white, khaki, or navy blue denim jeans/shorts/skirts

solid white, black, brown, or hunter/kelly green
The campus administrator will make the final decision regarding
clothes that are acceptable.
ADDITIONAL POLICY - SHIRT TAILS, PANTS, JEWELRY, BACK
PACKS, ETC.
When a student enters the building, he is required to have his shirt
tucked into his pants, skirt, or shorts. Shirts that are not long enough
to tuck should not be worn as these shirts will allow the midriff area
of the student to be bared. This is a violation of district dress
policy. Sweaters (white or green) and sweatshirts that have a banded
bottom, as well as jackets or coats, are exempted from this policy.
Flannel shirts will not be considered to be a jacket/coat. The
administrator will have the authority to determine if an item of
clothing worn by a student must be tucked.
Labels or logos on pants may not exceed a 12-square inch surface area
and may not appear as a waistband, zipper flap, hammer loop, or overall
straps. All articles of clothing must be free of any stripes or designs.
Jackets/coats worn inside the building must be of the full-zippered
or full-buttoned front style (no pullover coats allowed) and must remain
completely unzipped/unbuttoned at all times. Jackets/coats that are
identified by school administrators as being gang-related or containing
identified gang-related colors will not be allowed at any time. Athletic
attire of the following teams has been identified as unacceptable for
wear at Horace Mann: UNLV, LA Kings, Chicago Bulls, LA/Oakland Raiders,
Chicago White Sox, and the University of Miami. In addition, the
following jackets/coats may not be worn: solid red, solid blue, red
plaid, blue plaid, camouflage, trench coats, and dusters. Jackets/coats
that are predominately red and black or royal blue and black may not be
allowed. For a garment to be classified as a coat or jacket it must have
an inner lining (oversized button-down or flannel shirts will not meet
the criteria of a jacket/coat).
The campus administrator will make the final decision regarding
jackets/coats that are acceptable.
Students will not be allowed to wear any jewelry items bearing the
Mickey Mouse image. Lanyards cannot contain identified gang-related
colors. When worn around the neck, lanyards must be kept completely
inside the shirt. When placed in a pocket, lanyards must be kept
completely in the pocket and out of sight.
Back packs must not contain identified gang-related colors and must
be kept free of any hand-printed wording or designs and dangling
attachments (stuffed animals, toys, key rings, etc.).
