Bret Boyd chosen as campus coordinator, head football coach for Goose Creek Memorial
Bret Boyd was chosen as the campus coordinator and head football coach for Goose Creek Memorial High School during the Dec. 10 meeting of the Goose Creek CISD Board of Trustees.
Goose Creek Memorial, the district’s third high school campus, will open its doors in August 2008 as a projected 4-A high school.
Boyd, athletic coordinator and head football coach at Ellison High School in Killeen, has served in his current position since 2001. In 2005, his football team was the District 16-4A champion and reached the regional finals. In 2006, the school was reclassified to District 13-5A, and the team emerged as district runner-up.
From 1996 to 2001, Boyd served as athletic coordinator and head football coach at Harlingen High School in Harlingen. Under Boyd’s leadership, the team had a 39-16 record in five seasons, winning two district championships and advancing to the regional finals twice and the area finals in 2000.
Before being named athletic coordinator at Harlingen, he worked as offensive coordinator, head track coach and math teacher from 1993 to 1996.
Boyd also served as athletic director and head football coach for Royal ISD’s Royal High School in Brookshire, Texas, from 1991 to 1993. He started his career at McKinney High School in McKinney Texas, where he was offensive coordinator, assistant football coach, and teacher from 1983 to 1991.
A graduate of Tivy High School in Kerrville, Boyd earned his bachelor’s degree in education at Texas A & I University in Kingsville.
Boyd was named District 32-5A Coach of the Year and Rio Grande Valley Coach of the Year in both 1996 and 1997. He was nominated as the All-Star Football Coach for Region 7 and was part of the District 16-4A Coaching Staff of the Year in 2005.
Boyd and his wife, Brenda, also an educator and former coach, have two children—Brandi, an English teacher and cheer coach in San Antonio, and Beau, a junior at Texas A & M University at Corpus Christi.
Al Richard, principal of Goose Creek Memorial, said that the district hoped to hire an individual who had success as a head coach, and he believes that the Baytown and Highlands communities will be very impressed with Boyd.
“Having been in the playoffs for the past three years, he has the knowledge about what it takes to build a program that is playoff-caliber,” Richard said.
Richard and GCCISD athletic director Tom Ed Gooden believe that Boyd is the right person to help get all student athletes and a wide variety of athletic programs off to a great start at Goose Creek Memorial
“I’m looking forward to working with him in building the athletic staff so that all athletes at Goose Creek Memorial can be successful,” Richard said. “He has a vision of success for all students, not just football, which is important in an athletic coordinator.”
“We are extremely excited to welcome Bret Boyd to the Goose Creek CISD athletic family,” added Gooden. “Coach Boyd’s athletic experience, including his background as a head football coach and athletic coordinator, make him a perfect fit as the person to build the athletic department at Goose Creek Memorial High School. We believe that the athletes and coaches at Goose Creek Memorial will benefit greatly from his knowledge, leadership, commitment and work ethic.”
