Transportation Procedures

In the event of a disaster or emergency, the Superintendent, acting under Board authority, may close the schools and arrange for transportation for bus students. Schools will be advised by the Superintendent’s Office about transportation options. Such options include the following:

  • Immediate closure of specified schools and transportation of the students either to their homes or to alternate locations;

  • Placement of school buses at predetermined schools in readiness to transport students should the situation require;

  • Detainment of students at schools and provision of shelter at the schools; and/or

  • Acceleration of regular transportation schedule (run the regular routes, but ahead of schedule with no deviations)

Evacuation Procedures

  • In the case of hazardous materials incident or natural disaster, students will be transported by bus to alternative sites.

  • If students need to be evacuated before buses can arrive, students will walk quickly to the evacuation sites, away from danger.

  • Buses will meet students/staff at predetermined site(s).

Alternate School Locations

In the event of an emergency situation, students will be moved to an alternate site if it is too dangerous for them to remain at their school. If a large portion of the district is affected by a disaster, other sites may need to be considered.

The following is a list of the alternate sites to which students will be moved:

Baytown Junior School

Gentry Junior School

Highlands Elementary School

Horace Mann Junior School

General Emergency Procedures

  • Secure scene of incident.

  • Establish Campus Crisis Center and Communications Control Center.

  • Baytown Police SWAT team has authority, if called.
  • Notify campus personnel immediately through written communication. This should include:
  • Facts of the crisis, location of the crisis center
  • Where to send students if need arises
  • A brief review/reminder to teachers relating how to handle students in a crisis
  • An emphasis that principal will provide all information related to the crisis status.

  • Determine if class or work hours should be changed.
  • Allow students needing to remove themselves from classroom (with teacher’s permission and a pass) to report to the counselor’s office. (All faculty will keep the halls clear and direct students to appropriate areas.)

Note: Students will be placed in groups according to their emotional needs and assigned to a counselor. Counselors will counsel students in an area predetermined by the principal.Students who feel that they can return to class will be encouraged to do so.

  • Students too emotionally stressed to remain at school will be permitted to call their parents. If they decide to go home, the counselor will talk to the parents to ensure that students will not be alone. (Parents picking up their children should be informed where the students will be waiting.)

  • Parents will be informed of the support services to help in their decision of whether to allow their children to go home.

  • Students leaving to go home will register on the sign-out sheet.

  • All incident reports should be completed by the following day and sent to the Office of School Administration.

The above will be followed for all the below emergencies, which are divided into three categories:

  • Violent Situations;

  • Natural Disasters; and
