We’re working on the second six weeks of the school year now, and I hope you’ve settled in to some type of routine that works for you and your family.
Congratulations to Ross S. Sterling High School on a fantastic 50th Anniversary celebration! The recent events, including opening the time capsule and replacing it with new items, a pep rally, a program honoring alumni and former RSS principals, a reception, the proclamation from the Mayor’s Office, homecoming pre-game activities, alumni performances and a “50” formation on the field, culminating with a fireworks display, were the result of hard work on the part of numerous staff, students and parents. Well done!

It looks like our district is catching the eye of the news media for the good things happening here! September 2nd, Robert E. Lee High School was featured live on KHOU Channel 11 with anchor/reporter Sherry Williams for a pep rally in honor of the 50th game between Lee and


Ross S. Sterling High School. I hope you didn’t miss our recent feature on our Carver Elementary School cafeteria manager Tammy McRae, who lost 100 pounds by eating only from the school cafeteria menu. KPRC Channel 2 saw her story and came to Baytown to interview her. Much to our delight, she was asked to appear on ABC’s “Good Morning America” and was filmed by a local crew talking to the GMA anchors.

FOX 26 Houston featured RSS and GCM on the “Friday Football Fever” segment of their morning show October 7th as the rival schools showed their spirit for Pink Out Day at GCM and the 50th Anniversary celebration at RSS. Channel 11 also caught the GCM BUDS (Building Unity During Sports) in action. This involves volleyball team members and special education students at GCM, teaming up to play volleyball and create wonderful memories for both groups. The students play their BUDS games on Saturday mornings.

As you can see, wonderful things are happening across the district on every campus. We want to remind each and every person, whether a parent, grandparent, teacher or citizen within our community, that you have a fantastic opportunity to share all of the great things happening with our students as they flourish in this nurturing educational environment.

As you know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and all of our schools are “Pinking Out” in support of the cause. Early detection is a key factor in saving lives, so I thank our students and staff for their help in increasing awareness of the disease.

During an election year, there is always more negative talk about public education. I encourage you to be the voice for the outstanding job that our teachers are doing and praise for the exemplary performance of our students as they explore new horizons daily. Educators are members of their profession every day of their lives and should be honored for their commitment. Our colleagues and our students are worth every effort of praise.
