Smooth Start to 2014-2015 School Year
09/02/2014
As acting superintendent for Goose Creek CISD, I want to welcome you to the 2014-2015 school year. The start of a new school year is always exciting, and we have much to celebrate in our district.

Obrien photo All 28 campuses got off to a smooth start on the first day of school, even our new campuses—Antonio Bañuelos Elementary, Johnny T. Clark, Jr. Elementary and Alamo Elementary. There is nothing more heartwarming than watching students on the first day of school, eyes wide with wonder, anticipating what the new school year will hold. Thanks to support from the community through the 2013 Bond, these schools have helped the district address overcrowding on our elementary campuses.

In case you haven’t heard, Goose Creek CISD and all schools received “Met Standard” ratings from the Texas Education Agency for 2014. This is the highest rating given by TEA for 2014, and it is a true indication of the hard work and effort that our students, teachers and administrators put forth during the 2013-2014 school year. Academic plans have been developed, and everyone is on board to keep our district moving forward.

Technology is an important part of helping our students become 21st century learners. This year, iPads were deployed to all high school teachers and students to enhance instruction. All core content teachers throughout the district will have Promethean Boards in their classrooms, which will increase student engagement. We also plan to launch a mobile application (APP) to allow our tech-savvy parents and students to have information about our schools and our district at their fingertips.

Activities were already underway the first week of school. Before the Lee vs. Sterling junior varsity football game, the field at Sultis Stadium at the Memorial Sports Complex on the Robert E. Lee High School campus was dedicated to the late Ron Kramer, former head coach at REL and Goose Creek CISD athletic director from 1959 to 1991. Kramer led the Ganders to a record of 109 wins, 54 losses during his 16-year command as head coach. A bronze plaque in his honor was unveiled at the entrance to Sultis Stadium. We will set the dates for several other dedications soon, including our dedications of our new elementary schools.

It is an honor to serve you as acting superintendent. We will do our best to keep you informed about all the happenings in our district. Furthermore, I invite each of you to get involved by looking at our District Calendar of Events and planning to attend any of the numerous opportunities to watch our students soar! I wish everyone a wonderful school year.
