Change Is in the Air at GCCISD
10/01/2014
If you feel like change is in the air in Goose Creek CISD, you are correct. Since August, I have represented our district as acting superintendent. In this role, I have had the opportunity to interact with several groups and organizations as well as with numerous individuals, listening to your ideas and sharing my plans for moving our district forward.

I am appreciative of the warm welcome I have received at meetings, at football games and even in restaurants. Many of you have been a part of the rich history of the Baytown/Highlands area and are looking for reassurance that our district is headed in the right direction. I want to assure you that this is also my community, and I have a child who attends Goose Creek Schools. I will do my best to make decisions that are in the best interests of our students, our schools and our community.

Goose Creek CISD has also welcomed two new administrators recently. Candy Ochoa, former district science coordinator, was recently named director of curriculum and instruction. Ochoa has served Goose Creek CISD for 30 years. Beth Dombrowa, our new director of communications, comes to us from M. D. Anderson, bringing 20 years of experience in the public relations field. We are pleased to have both of them in these positions and hope you will support them as they work to have a positive impact on our district.

For the past decade, the Adaptive P.E. and Special Olympics programs have been housed at Alamo Elementary at Kilgore Center. With the opening of the new Alamo Elementary and the first stages of repurposing the old location to expand Stuart Career Center underway, the program has been moved to Austin Elementary. We plan to create adequate space at Austin and make sure that students, coaches and teachers feel at home at that location.

Another change in Goose Creek CISD is the addition of three new elementary schools – Dr. Antonio Bañuelos Elementary, Alamo Elementary and Dr. Johnny T. Clark Elementary. These schools are a result of the 2013 Bond approved by the community, and they opened just in time for the first day of school, August 25th. We will host our dedication ceremony for Clark on October 23rd, Alamo on October 28th and Bañuelos on October 30th. The public is invited to attend these celebrations and tour the new schools.

On August 28th, we dedicated the field at Pete Sultis Stadium in the Memorial Sports Complex to Ron Kramer, former head coach at Robert E. Lee High School and GCCISD athletic director. A bronze plaque was unveiled in his honor. October 10th at 6:00 p.m. before the GCM vs. Lee football game at Stallworth Stadium by Gate 1, we will unveil a plaque in honor of Dan Stallworth, for whom the stadium was named.

Within the next 12-18 months, we will complete a Transportation Center, a Data Technology Center, and the new IMPACT Early College High School. The Groundbreaking Ceremony for IMPACT is planned for October 16th at 10:00 a.m. at the school’s site at 1415 Market Street, which was the location of the district’s previous Administration Building.

Soon you will have the opportunity for input and feedback via a new blog known as The Goose Call. Diverse topics will be addressed by district staff, students and community leaders.

Things – they are a’changin’ in Goose Creek CISD, and with your input and support, they are changing for the positive. We appreciate your interest in our district and hope that you will take time to attend some school and district-wide activities and events so that you can watch our students shine.
