IMPACT Students Honored at Lee College Presidential Honors Day
Two IMPACT Early College High School students were honored at the recent Lee College Presidential Honors Day. Divya Singh was inducted into the Lee College Hall of Fame, and Erik Carbajal was recognized as IMPACT Outstanding Student of the Year.
“Divya Singh is a remarkable Lee College and IMPACT ECHS student. She balances the heavy workload of a fulltime high school schedule and college courses, having maintained a perfect grade point average at Lee College and stayed at the top of her class at IMPACT. She will graduate with her associate degree in May before graduating from high school in June,” said Georgeann Ward, Honors Program Coordinator at Lee College.
An excellent writer and accomplished scholar, Divya has completed 15 hours of Honors courses at Lee College as part of her core curriculum. As one of the most outstanding students in the program, she has been invited to present her work at multiple national, regional and local academic conferences, most notably, the National Undergraduate Literature Conference and the National Collegiate Honors Council Conference.
Heavily involved in the community through the volunteer efforts that IMPACT Early College High School promotes, Divya is active in clubs at IMPACT and has served as the president of the Interact Club and the president of the International Club. She also is an active member of the Student Council and the National Honor Society.
“Divya is a dedicated student and shows incredible critical thinking. It is impressive that she is able to juggle the demands of high school and college at the same time. Although her passion is for science, she is accomplished across the curriculum.,” Ward said.
Divya has accepted a scholarship to attend Texas A & M University in the fall to major in chemical engineering.
Senior Erik Carbajal was honored as the 2017-18 Outstanding IMPACT Student of the Year. He will graduate with his high school diploma as well as his associate degree.
“Erik has been involved at school, in the community, and with his church throughout his four years at IMPACT and has maintained grades and been a positive leader on our campus,” said Laura Reyes, IMPACT principal. “His dedication to serving others began when his father took him to Houston to give out blankets, food, and supplies and to minister to the homeless and continued with his involvement in their church. He followed his mother’s example, serving as a children’s pastor, and he is still actively involved.”
Erik worked with the Mayor’s Summer Work Program and was named a Shining Star as a result of his great work ethic and positive attitude.
“Other students often seek him out for guidance and advice, and our faculty and staff members know that he can be called upon for any task and he will always do his best to get the job done right,” Reyes said.
Erik was sworn in to the United States Army on January 31, and he is considering applying for West Point.
“He is self-motivated, values his faith and his family, puts others first and sets high expectations for himself. He is an outstanding IMPACT student and an amazing person, and we can’t wait to see what Erik will accomplish,” Reyes said.
