Grade Science Program
The Eddie V. Gray
Wetlands Center and Baytown Nature Center Field Trip
|
 |
|
In 1999, the Eddie V. Gray Wetlands Center, in cooperation with Goose Creek CISD,
initiated a program that involves sending all fifth grade students in the
district on an all-day field trip to the Wetlands Center and the Baytown
Nature Center. Sallie Sherman, Environmental
Education Specialist, has designed activities at
both locations that introduce students to the wetlands environment and
emphasize the importance of our nation's wetlands. |
|
| In addition to Tracey
Prothro, the Superintendent of Natural Resources Programs for both the
Wetlands Center and the Nature Center, and the Wetlands Center Staff,
special thanks go to the numerous community volunteers
who are donating their time and expertise
guiding and teaching students during the field trips. Special thanks
go to Marilyn Craig, Judy Gunn, Dwayne Litteer, Laura
Pledger, Charlotte Wells, Jane Reschke, Erica Nelson, Carol Thompson, and Jim
Young. Special thanks also goes to Bayer for providing the funding for
equipping the science lab as well as supplying volunteers who assist in the
fifth grade program and to ExxonMobil for its support of science education
in Baytown. An interdisciplinary Language Arts/Science unit has been developed that
integrates two language arts activities and the field trip. Written
by GCCISD teachers Linda Gouner and Mitzi Tull, the unit includes a
non-fiction science book and a fictional novel with numerous activities
included for each.
