Coronavirus Disease 2019 Updates
August 7, 2020 Message from Superintendent of Schools Dr. Randal O'Brien
08/07/2020

Dear Goose Creek CISD Families,

As we begin the 2020-2021 school year, I want you to know how much I appreciate each of you. Our district could not ask for a more dedicated, caring community, and I am proud of the way you handled the challenges we faced last spring as a result of the COVID-19 crisis, embracing technology with online instruction and adjusting to the stresses that have been brought on by the pandemic. While we had hoped to return to some sense of normalcy by the beginning of this school year, we have chosen to follow guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Texas Education Agency and executive orders from our state and local authorities. As you know, we will begin the school year with virtual instruction for a three week period due to the rise of COVID-19 cases and begin our hybrid face-to-face instruction on September 28th. This publication serves as a guide to our staff, students, and families as we return to face-to-face instruction. Because this is a fluid event, we will continue to provide updates to this plan as necessary. As always, the safety of our students and staff is our top priority, and it is our goal to provide the safest learning environment possible. We have worked hard to provide the safest and most comprehensive plan for our students and staff. Working with our Board of Trustees, we will strive to make informed decisions in the best interest of our students and staff. Again, thank you for everything you do, and I pray that we all stay safe have a smooth start to the school year.

Sincerely,

Dr. Randal O'Brien

Superintendent of Schools

Safe Return To School Plan
07/08/2020

July 8, 2020

Goose Creek Families,

We have received many questions regarding the Safe Return To School Plan. The district is compiling a Q & A document to be placed on the district webpage. We appreciate your input and will try to provide answers as they are available. Please note that things may change as the commissioner of education and the governor provide additional guidance documents. For now, we are trying to evaluate staffing to ensure the safety of our students. The registration for Virtual 100% At-Home Learning is a large piece of our staffing. Please be aware that parents may change their mind as to the instructional model up to two weeks (July 30th) prior to the start of instruction. After July 30th, your child will be locked into that instructional model until the end of the grading period.

If your child is new to Goose Creek or is a former student who did not attend a GC school last year, enrollment will not be completed until after July 14th when attendance clerks return. You will still have the opportunity to choose virtual instruction until July 30th.

We will continue to provide communication as the district moves forward. Thanks for your understanding.

Goose Creek CISD Administration

2020-2021 Proposed Back To School Plan
07/07/2020

July 7, 2020

GCCISD Families,

At the July 6th board meeting, the Goose Creek CISD Board of Trustees discussed the option of all students receiving virtual instruction at the start of the school as well as implementing a hybrid model. The hybrid model, which includes face to face instruction, will provide modified instructional days. The model will also limit class sizes to no more than 15 students. Since the safety of our students and staff is our priority, campuses will provide social distancing, ensure campuses are cleaned frequently and enforce the use of masks. The proposed hybrid model for the grade levels will be posted on the district webpage for you to review.

If you prefer for your child/children to receive instruction virtually at home, you will need to register by logging in to the Parent Portal and selecting the student you want to register for 100 % Virtual At-Home Learning. You will see the campus message tab for the individual student and campus. Select the link for Registration for 100% Virtual At-Home Learning and fill out the form. Each campus has its own form to track student needs, so you will need to repeat this process for each student you would like to register for 100% virtual At-Home Learning. If you choose to register your child for 100% Virtual At-Home Learning, the child must complete the first six weeks before changing the method of instruction. We need to collect the data to create schedules and communicate clearly to families, so we ask that you register your child by Friday, July 10th.

We appreciate your patience as we work to provide a safe return to school.

Proposed Hybrid Back To School Plan Graphic

July 1, 2020

GCCISD Families,

Due to safety guidelines and the increased number of COVID-19 cases, we are providing an update as to upcoming events scheduled for July. • All proms are cancelled due to venue restrictions and state guidelines.

  • Face to face summer school is cancelled.

    • This also includes the Summer Bridge program for IMPACT ECHS and Stuart Career Tech HS.
    •

    • We have some dual credit and CNA certification programs that may continue if a parent and student wish to complete the required hours and assessments.
    •

    • High school students who need to recover credit may still complete the assigned projects. Please contact your high school campus to obtain the project and return any completed projects.
    •

  • The graduate celebrations have been postponed until further notice. High school campuses will be reaching out to communicate a day and time for graduates to pick up diplomas.
  •

We will provide additional information as it becomes available. There will also be an update on our safe school start up plan presented at our regularly scheduled July 6th School Board meeting. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work through this together.

Atentamente,
Dr. Randal O'Brien
Superintendente de Escuelas

June 22, 2020 Message from Superintendent of Schools Dr. Randal O'Brien
06/22/2020

Goose Creek CISD Families,

First, I’d like to thank our students, our families, our staff and our community for their flexibility, patience and hard work during the spring semester. We have never before experienced anything like this pandemic. As your superintendent, I could not be prouder of the way you have handled each situation, whether it be online instructional training, lesson delivery or essential workers reporting to work during this crisis, you’ve all allowed us to pull together as we work through this unnatural event.

We all share in some level of anxiety about where we find ourselves, me included, as we map out our plans for returning to school this fall. Our district leadership team has been working hard on several options to consider. We will still be contingent upon the Texas Education Agency with their guidance on the reopening of schools, as well as our Governor’s executive orders which will also impact our course of action. We plan to release a tentative “Return to School” plan in early July. This plan will include many safety measures, operational precautions as well as classroom safety protocols. We are also sending out a district survey to our Goose Creek families, so that we can receive valuable feedback from you about the start of school.

Please know that our number one priority will be the safety of our students and staff, and our district will make each and every decision with that in mind. Goose Creek’s instructional focus is to develop the whole child, thereby enabling students to nurture their own fundamental ability to think independently, to organize their thoughts and opinions based upon facts learned and that will sustain their belief system supported by these very learning experiences.

Teachers and students alike, have called for the ability to learn in a face to face setting, which I believe is a natural reaction that reflects our human spirit. Teaching is much more than a transfer of knowledge as proposed by renowned psychologist Jean Piaget and the like. I believe It is the gift of hope for a better future. It is the confidence instilled in those who lack it. It is the assurance that none of us are alone in our plight. It is the corrective tone or look intended for a redirection, and yet the smile of approval for a job well done. In its simplest form, teaching is love. I want to thank our teachers for truly loving what you do. It shows!

We firmly believe that through this tragedy and chaos will come strength, refinement and efficiencies through technology that may enable us to demonstrate our capacity as a school district to excel and instill an even greater sense of pride within our very own community.

Again, we thank you for your support and patience as we finalize the details. Please be assured that we will communicate with you about our plans for returning to school as soon as possible. Be safe!

Dr. Randal O'Brien

Superintendent of Schools

Summer School Instruction
04/22/2020

April 22, 2020

Goose Creek CISD Families,

As we continue to navigate through the nine weeks of online instruction our students are receiving, we want to make you aware of the plans to address the needs of our students during summer instruction. If your child has opted not to complete assignments during this time, he or she will have received an incomplete for the fifth six weeks or on the upcoming progress report. Any student who has received an incomplete, which will convert to a failing grade, will be required to attend summer school. Summer school will run July 20 – 31, 2020. We ask that you monitor your child’s grades and participation in all classes.

Summer school will be hosted at each campus in the district. Students who fail a core course may also receive an invitation to summer school to address any foundational skills they need support with prior to the start of school. This should help prepare them for the upcoming school year. If you have any concerns, please reach out to your child's teacher or administrator. Thank you for your support as we continue to educate our students.

Update on GCCISD School Closures, 4/17/2020
04/17/2020

April 17, 2020

Goose Creek CISD Family,

This has been a long, stressful few weeks for our community, our state, our nation and the world. Waiting anxiously for news that COVID-19 is under control, we have worked to comply with the order to stay home and practice social distancing by closing schools and cancelling all our activities, much to everyone’s disappointment.

This week, Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo extended the stay at home order through most of May. Today, Texas Governor Greg Abbott confirmed the extension, although offering us hope in discussing a plan to turn our economy around with a layered approach to opening the state back up in tiers based upon necessity. I doubt we will see large venue gatherings such as concerts, sporting events--and yes, even graduation ceremonies-–anytime soon. However, I believe events with fewer numbers of congregants, such as smaller church services with rigid guidelines for size of groups and distancing practices clearly defined, may provide some hope of normalcy within sight.

This, of course, means that Goose Creek CISD, along with the other school districts in Texas, will not be returning to finish the 2019-2020 school year and will have to make alternative arrangements to celebrate our students’ success. We will continue our online instruction so that our students will be ready for next school year, and we will provide summer school for those who need the additional instruction, most likely to occur at the beginning of next year, rather than immediately following the end of this semester. While this school closure affects all of us, it is especially disappointing for our seniors, who left for spring break and will never return to their schools as high school students, but rather as alumni.

Seniors, my simple message to you is that we will not let your 13 years of hard work go unrecognized. We are just as proud of you as we have been of any of our graduating classes – maybe even more so, because you are showing strength and courage in the face of this pandemic that has kept you from participating in so many of your senior activities. When I arrived in Goose Creek, you were transitioning from elementary school to junior school, and I have seen so much growth in you as individuals, as we have elevated everything we do as a district, from our rigorous academics to the higher order technology, to our expanded extra-curricular, CTE and college course offerings.

You have embraced everything that has come your way with grace and enthusiasm, so I am not surprised at your extraordinary ability to persevere through this crisis. We know you have missed out on some of these rites of passage, but we fully anticipate that you will rise from this stronger than ever just as you have with a hurricane, a flood, a recession, and a host of other personal challenges along the way. We have some exciting plans to honor you in the months ahead and look forward to celebrating you and your many accomplishments with your family.

We simply cannot thank our staff enough for your willingness to step into these uncharted waters and embark upon our online instructional plan, technological distribution, the multitude of WebEx meetings, grab and go meal distribution, online student and parent conferences in addition to all of the other out-of-the-box new experiences you’ve encountered along the way. Hopefully, you will agree it has made us better collaborators, better teachers and yes, better people. Wishing everyone blessings for increased quality time with family and the opportunity for each of us to become a little more focused on the important things in our lives.

Sincerely,

Updates on Food Assistance, SNAP, Unemployment Benefits & Federal Stimulus Package
04/01/2020

Hunger Free Texans has continued to be in contact with both State and Federal Agencies regarding minimizing the impact of the Corona Virus Emergency to our Texas Counties. We wanted to provide you with these updates as well as other important timely information for your agencies regarding feeding and non-feeding programs and services.

We encourage you as community partners to help direct and guide families that you serve, to services that will maximize state and federal food and non-food benefits services. Some of these are listed below. Please note some of these recommendations include information from the 2 Trillion Dollar Federal Stimulus Package agreed to this week by congress.

Updates for Community Partners:

  • Food Assistance Through SNAP. To maximize food assistance help for individual and family households, encourage individuals and families to apply for SNAP through normal SNAP assistors located in community partner locations in their Texas county. Individuals and families can either apply in person if organizations are open, if not apply online through www.YourTexasBenefits.Com or by calling HHSC’s Information and Referral Service Help Line, 2-1-1. HHSC is the only agency that can determine eligibility.

  • Benefits Extension for 3 months for SNAP Recipients.
USDA has approved a SNAP waiver for Texas to automatically extend the certification period for an additional three months to households whose benefits are scheduled to end in April, May and June 2020 in all Texas Counties. This would allow HHSC to also waive the periodic reporting requirements during the extension and allow the State to more effectively use staff to timely process the influx of new applications during the Covid19 Emergency.

  • SNAP Waiver Allowing SNAP Benefits At Take-Out & Drive Thru Restaurants.
A Waiver letter was sent from HHSC to the USDA on Tuesday seeking permission to allow SNAP recipients to use their benefits at take-out and drive-thru restaurants. Hunger Free Texans has been in consultation with USDA and they did receive the state’s waiver request. It is being reviewed by their legal department. We will keep you posted if approved.

  • Food Assistance Through Schools.
Schools Nutrition Programs have emergency flexibilities already approved by congress to provide student meals when schools are closed. Schools can deliver school meals using the USDA NSLP/Summer Meals Program to provide alternative methods such as Grab & Go curbside delivery or home delivered meals. We encourage schools to implement these services if not yet implemented. To ensure that you can provide these services you must be approved by the state to do so. Schools districts should contact the Texas Department of Agriculture or your local ESC location for further clarification, assistance or information. To find a local regional ESC office near you: www.Squaremeals.org/ESC .

  • Unemployment Assistance. To maximize food & household assistance needs for individual and family households, encourage those recently unemployed due to the Corona Virus Emergency to apply directly for unemployment benefits through the Texas Workforce Commission. They can apply online at Unemployment Benefit Services by clicking the link Submit an application for unemployment benefits. This service is available seven days a week, 24hours a day. Or Call a Tele-Center at 800-939-6631 and speak to a customer service representative.
**Assistance has been expanded from 26 weeks to 39 weeks. Maximum weekly amounts have been increased by $600 to further assist household with bills such as utility, car payments, rent & mortgage etc.

  • Direct Payments from Federal Stimulus Package for Individuals & Families.
The federal 2 trillion dollar stimulus package with democratic input was agreed to by the U.S Senate last night. The bill still needs approval by the U.S. House and the President will need to sign. Once signed, individuals making under $75K will receive $1,200/ Married couples earning up to $150K will receive $2400 with $500 additional per child in family.

  • America’s Pantry System
Under the previous stimulus package approved by congress the nation’s 200 food banks will receive $400 million dollars to purchase, store & deliver food and to ensure that pantry agencies in their communities continue to be stocked. Clients can access their local pantry agency by calling the states information and referral service line 2-1-1.

  • Meals for Low
Income Seniors-$250 million was previously approved for States. As a result, Texas just received $16.2 million dollars for home-delivered and prepackaged meals to low-income seniors. Seniors should contact their local Meals on Wheels provider or Area Agency on Aging for more information. This can be done by calling the states information and referral service line 2-1-1.

Non-Feeding Information for Low-Income Families, Seniors, Veterans, and those with Disabilities:

  • Keeping Communities Informed on Corona Virus Public Health Information.
Many cable and communications companies are now offering free television channels for households to stay connected with public health updates from news outlets. As a result, some households may also receive other non-news outlet channels since many people are stuck at home during this time. Encourage your clients to look through their channels to see if new channels have been added. If not offered in their community, they should contact their cable provider to see if this available for free (without subscribing). This may help alleviate some of the boredom families are experiencing while at home or during quarantine.

Please note that many organizations are closed due to the Corona Virus Emergency so online services or phone lines for families is going to be the best way to apply for these benefits programs. SNAP or Unemployment Assistance agencies are currently extremely busy with persons seeking assistance therefore please encourage the people that you serve to continue calling if they cannot get through or if phone lines are busy.

Update on GCCISD Schools Closure
03/31/2020
Goose Creek CISD Families,

Goose Creek CISD schools will remain closed until at least Friday, May 1, 2020, in accordance with the extension of Texas Governor Greg Abbot's disaster declaration. This order is an effort to limit human contact to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

While this is certainly an inconvenience for all of us, there is nothing more important than the health and safety of our students and our staff as well as the community. We are aligning with school districts throughout Texas in following this order. Fortunately, our district quickly developed a plan for ensuring that we provide children with meals as well as for online instruction. Our staff passed out nearly two thousand iPads to students last week, and instructional packets have been assembled and made available to those without technology this week. Please know that we are working every day to come up with ideas to make this process smoother for everyone.

We ask that you continue to follow the recommended protocol of staying home if possible, practicing social distancing, washing your hands frequently, using hand sanitizer and covering a cough or sneeze with the inside of your elbow.

As we work through this together, we will provide more information on decisions as they are made. Thanks to our board of trustees for their support as TEAM Goose Creek does all that we can to support our students and families during this event. Thanks to you for your support and cooperation, and may you and your family find opportunity to draw nearer in gratitude for one another while taking every measure possible to remain safe and healthy!

Instructional Packets Available for Pre-K - Eighth Grade
03/30/2020

Dear Families,

A big thank you to all our families who have embraced the need to monitor home-based instruction in order to keep our families safe. We appreciate the support you have provided as the district has transitioned to online instruction. Not only have we provided teacher directed videos to model student expectations, but we have checked out 1784 iPads to support online instruction.

The district is aware that not all families have the capacity to receive online instruction. We have prepared three-week packets for grades PK – 8th grade that families can pick up if necessary. The packets do not provide the opportunity to communicate directly with your teacher and do not provide instructional videos, but they do allow our students the opportunity to stay on target academically.

If you need packets, you may pick them up this Tuesday through Thursday at all campuses offering grab and go meals. You will request the appropriate grade level packet if needed during lunch time hours. We will record your child’s information and notify their teacher that your child will be completing packets instead of online instruction.

Directions to complete and submit packets will be provided with each grade level packet. Supplemental bilingual materials are also included for primary grades. If your child is a part of the new arrival program, you will pick up our packet at Alamo Elementary.

If we can be of further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact the district or your teacher.

Thank you for all you are doing to support your child and we look forwarding to seeing each of you soon.

Sincerely,
Goose Creek CISD

Estimadas Familias,

Atentamente,
Goose Creek CISD

More Grab and Go Distribution Locations Available
03/20/2020

Starting Monday, March 23, Goose Creek CISD will adjust its Grab and Go meal distribution to include additional locations and to allow both breakfast and lunch to be given out at one time. This will not only give families easier access to the meal distribution sites, but it also will allow them to pick up breakfast and lunch in one stop. Children must be present to receive meals.

Each child age 18 and under will receive two bags of food. Goose Creek CISD staff will hand out the food from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. on weekdays.  The 19 locations include: Alamo, Ashbel Smith, Austin, Bañuelos, Bowie, Carver, Clark, Crockett, Harlem, Highlands, Lamar, San Jacinto and Travis elementaries; Cedar Bayou, Gentry and Horace Mann junior schools and Goose Creek Memorial, Lee and Sterling high schools.

“We want as many people to come as possible,” said Natalie Edwards, director of nutrition services. “We are working on a set menu for each week, and we plan to include some fun foods for our children.”

GCCISD's Online Instruction
03/19/2020

March 19, 2020

Dear Goose Creek Families,

We appreciate your patience as we work through the method of providing online instruction for your child. Our teachers have been receiving training on the platform we will be using to deliver instruction.  Children in PK through 2nd grade will be using Seesaw. Parents/students will receive a Home Learning Code if they have not already been using this platform. Children in 3rd through 12th grade will be using Google Classroom. You will receive a Join Code for your child’s teacher’s Google Classroom if they have not already been using this platform. These codes may be distributed to you via Remind, Class Dojo, student email, parent email, or text messaging.

Teachers will be posting instructional videos, assignments and activities for your child to do during the week. If your child has multiple teachers, he/she will be enrolled in multiple Google Classrooms.  For students who are in special programs, the resource/inclusion teachers will be partnering with the general education teacher to provide additional support for your child. Students in self-contained classrooms will also receive instruction through their assigned teacher. All accommodations and modifications will be provided to the best of the district’s ability. An ARD or Amendment may be held to discuss any changes to programming to support your child during this time.

Teachers will be reaching out to you to verify you have internet access and the hardware (computer, iPad, phones) to receive instruction. If you do not, please reach out to your child’s teacher so that we can collect data and provide alternative methods of support for your child. We are looking at possibly checking out technology or providing at home resources and packets for students to complete.

Your teacher/s will have assigned office hours where they will be available to live chat with you or your child to support their instruction. You may provide questions on your child’s learning platform at any time, and teachers will reply by their next office hour if you are not available at the assigned time. The following table provides your child’s office hours:

Office Hours

We will continue to communicate with you through this time. You will receive progress reports via the parent portal where you can see your child’s grades (1st through 12th grade). You will receive report cards through the mail and can always view them on the parent portal (1st through 12th grade).

We will provide tech support where you can call in if you are having difficulty with your device or accessing and uploading assignments. You can reach tech support by calling 281-421-4402 from 8 AM to 8 PM.

Our goal is to provide quality instruction so that your child has no gaps in curriculum prior to the next school year. We are excited to continue to work with your child and look forward to this new adventure.  Please note, students are required to participate in instruction. We are required to complete the school year in order to move your child to the next grade.

We will continue to reach out with new information and are here to support you and your child in any way possible. Please visit https://www.gccisd.net/page/OnlineInstruction for more information and resources.

We wish you the best, and stay safe.

Sincerely,
Goose Creek CISD Administration

TEA Spring Break Guidance / Update on Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19)
03/06/2020

TEA Guidance / Update on Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19):
Spring break is beginning for some districts in Texas the week of March 9, and many other districts the week of March 16. As usual, a large number of school personnel, students, and their families will be traveling outside of the state for vacation, with some even traveling far outside the country.

With increased news reports about the growing number of cases globally of novel coronavirus (COVID-19)—and Texas’ first confirmed cases this week—many districts have posed questions to the Texas Education Agency (TEA) about how best to manage concerns about the health of students and personnel who will be returning to their campuses after spring break travel.

Travel Information for the Goose Creek CISD Community
03/06/2020

Goose Creek CISD is committed to the health and safety of our students, staff and their families, so with spring break just around the corner, we want to provide some additional information from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) regarding travel to countries where there is widespread community transmission of the COVID-19 coronavirus.

The CDC has identified four countries for which it has issued a Level 3 Travel Health Notice, which is one that recommends that travelers avoid all non-essential travel to the particular country. The four countries are China, Iran, South Korea, and Italy. A student or staff member who travels to or through those countries with a Level 3 Travel Health Notice should stay home and monitor his or her health for 14 days upon return. We encourage everyone in our community to go to the CDC’s website for factual, up-to-date information regarding COVID-19 before traveling, since Level 3 Travel Health Notices may be posted for other countries at any time. The following is guidance from the CDC to consider before traveling:

Employees who travel anywhere out of the country should notify their supervisor. If the employee has traveled to or through a country with a Level 3 Travel Health Notice, the employee must stay home for a 14-day monitoring period. If the employee shows no sign of illness after the 14-day period, the employee will return to the job site.

Parents of students who travel to or through any of the countries identified with a Level 3 Travel Health Notice must contact the student’s principal or school nurse upon return to the United States so that the 14-day monitoring period can be determined. We anticipate that student absences during this time will be excused. The campus will work with the student and parent to provide assignments and resources. If the student shows no sign of illness, the student may return to the classroom at the completion of the 14-day monitoring period.

Based on current information, we can all help protect against the spread of COVID-19 by following these basic health practices:

  • Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol–based hand sanitizer.
  • Avoid touching one’s eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick and stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with the inside of your elbow when you cough or sneeze.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.

Dear Goose Creek CISD Family,

In response to our community’s growing concern about the new strain of coronavirus, COVID-19, I’d like to share some information about how Goose Creek CISD is managing the prevention of COVID-19 in our schools. A new type of illness can be scary, but we can protect our students, staff and the community with simple everyday actions that provide protection from all types of respiratory viruses.

Our district nurses are remaining vigilant in ensuring that we provide a continuous standard of care for all our students. We also continue to encourage effective habits of washing hands, covering coughs and sneezes and using hand sanitizer. These practices not only help prevent the spread of COVID-19, but also help prevent the spread of other infections that can lead to student illnesses.

We will continue to use medical grade cleaning supplies, following virus prevention protocol by wiping down desks, doorknobs and public areas daily in an effort to keep our facilities clean and eliminate viruses. Please be assured that we are in communication with the Center for Disease Control and local health officials, and we are taking all precautionary measures possible to prevent the spread of all communicable diseases.

With spring break ahead of us, I know that many of our families will be traveling in the United States as well as internationally, so I want to remind you to take proper precautions when traveling. Please stay informed about and follow the Center for Disease Control’s travel advisories and protocols. Updates about this rapidly changing situation are provided frequently on the CDC’s website.

In the event of an outbreak of flu or COVID-19, our district will work with the Texas Education Agency on a plan for evaluating current attendance laws, perfect attendance awards and exam exemptions. We encourage our students and staff to stay home when they are ill, and we respect and support the decisions you make in managing your family’s health.

Our Goose Creek CISD website will provide updates over spring break as more information becomes available through the CDC or other health agencies. I urge you to contact your healthcare provider if you have any questions.

In Goose Creek CISD, we are all part of a team that works to provide a safe learning environment for our students. Thank you for sharing your children with us and for your support of our district.

I wish you a safe and healthy spring break, and I’m looking forward to seeing you at our district’s spring activities.

Sincerely,

Dr. Randal O’Brien

Atentamente,

Dr. Randal O’Brien

February 27, 2019 Message from Superintendent of Schools
02/27/2020

Dear Goose Creek CISD Family,

An outbreak of respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus first identified in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China, has caused an outbreak of respiratory illness and the United States has confirmed a handful of coronavirus cases related to travel.  Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) is an emerging, rapidly evolving situation. I want to assure you that our school district is keeping track of this situation through daily and weekly conference calls with proven and trustworthy sources: our local health department, the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  According to the CDC, the immediate health risk of COVID-19 to the American public is LOW.

Updated information from the CDC on COVID-19 in the United States can be found at https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/index.html.  The most recent information about coronavirus in Texas may be found at https://dshs.texas.gov/coronoavirus/

Based on the current information, health officials are recommending local communities and schools take the same steps to protect against this virus as we take to prevent the spread of everyday illnesses like the common cold or the flu:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use at least a 60% alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with the inside of your elbow when you cough or sneeze.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.

COVID-19 is believed to be spread through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes, much in the way the flu and other respiratory viruses are spread.  Symptoms can be fever, cough, or difficulty breathing.  At this time, persons considered at risk are those with travel to China, or those in close contact with persons infected with COVID-19.

While a new type of illness can be scary, we can protect our students, teachers, and the broader community by using simple everyday actions that protect people from other types of respiratory viruses.  Our District nurses are remaining vigilant in ensuring that a continuous standard of care is provided for all our students.  Additionally, we will continue to work with our employees to encourage the simple and effective habits of frequent handwashing, covering every cough or sneeze, and cleaning classroom tables/surfaces frequently.  This is important not just to help prevent the spread of COVID-19, but to help prevent the spread of other infections that can lead to student illness and absences.

Thank you for your support of our students, our staff and District. Your confidence in our ability to adapt and continue to maintain a quality education under any circumstances is well placed and appreciated.

Sincerely,
Randal O'Brien
Superintendent of Schools

Atentamente,
Randal O'Brien
