Houston Public Media Hosts Nation’s Largest Regional Spelling Bee April 7

 

Two finalists will advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee

 

HOUSTON – (March 21, 2018) – Fifty-three spellers representing grades second through eighth from 1,060 schools in 34 Texas counties will face-off Saturday, April 7 for the 2018 Houston Public Media Spelling Bee, the nation’s largest regional spelling bee. The event will take place at Baylor College of Medicine Academy at James D. Ryan Middle School in Houston’s Third Ward, 2610 Elgin St., Houston, TX, 77004. Click here for map and directions. Final rounds and highlights of the spelling bee will be broadcast on TV 8 and stream on houstonpublicmedia.org/spellingbee at 3:30 p.m., Saturday, April 14.

 

Anushka Ranjan, an eighth-grader from Highlands Junior School, will represent Goose Creek CISD in the 2018 Houston Public Media Spelling Bee. The top two spellers will advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee, which will be held May 27- June 1 in the Washington, D.C. area. Top contenders from the 2017 Houston Public Media Spelling Bee placed fourth and fifth in the nation.

 

Ernie Manouse, Houston Public Media arts and culture senior producer, returns as host. Anjay Ajodha, three-time Houston Spelling Bee champion and one of the youngest to compete at Scripps National Spelling Bee at age 8, returns as a special guest commentator.

 

Houston Public Media hosts and broadcasts this major spelling bee competition annually as part of its commitment to education. Bee participation provides every student with valuable experience in setting goals, developing poise and sportsmanship as well as skills for public speaking.

 

Houston Public Media is the first public broadcast television station in the nation to broadcast a Scripps- affiliated local spelling bee. This marks the tenth year that Houston Public Media has staged this prestigious academic competition.
