Twelve Crockett Elementary fifth-graders had the opportunity to attend Explore UT, a one-day event held March 4 on the University of Texas at Austin campus, to experience hands-on research activities. The students became Longhorns for the day and, along with some of their parents and Crockett staff members, selected from numerous activities, visited the school store and had lunch in the dining hall with UT students.

Zachary Saurer enjoyed several of the science projects and just walking around on the campus.

“We made clouds in a bottle and did a science project with two little cups and a big bucket of water. Then we made an M out of two straws and saw how the water flowed into the cup.”

Zachary said. “We also made a catapult out of popsicle sticks to launch candy.”

Another highlight of Zachary’s trip was learning to use chopsticks. His family bought some UT shirts to commemorate their visit before they headed back to Baytown.

“I learned about science, teamwork and how to be helpful and respectful,” said Zachary, who is already making plans to attend UT.

Even several days after her trip, Sabrina Chavez was still excited about her UT experience.

“We watched a lady do some experiments with dry ice in a bottle. She used ties and a string to spin it like a tornado,” Sabrina said.

She also enjoyed making a bouncy ball.

“We took four teaspoons of cornstarch and borax to make slime. We made it into a ball and put it in a balloon,” Sabrina said.

Brianna Cervantes, Cesar Nunez, Ahtziri Garcia, Josue Roman, Taylor Agnew, Zarai Cortez, Jasani Anderson, Porche Dowdy, Thomas Moreno and Lauren Agnew also made the trip along with parents Elizabeth Reynaga, Jesus Nunez, Luzraquel Higareda, Ingrid Cortez, Jaime Lawrence, Bessie Dowdy and Michael Saurer. Julie DaSilva, Crockett counselor, and Julie Wylie, Crockett teacher, organized the trip.

“I wanted to give my 5th graders a taste of university life experience. I was astonished by how involved my students as well as their parents were in all the different activities. Their excitement was heartwarming,” DaSilva said.

The students who attended hope that others will have the same opportunity.

“Everyone deserves the same chance to go to this,” Sabrina said. “It was a ‘blow mind’ place!”
