Sterling PALS Get Luminarias Ready for Bay Area Relay for Life

Bay Area Relay for Life is just around the corner. Every year, a major highlight of the event is the Ceremony of Light in which luminarias placed along the track are lit to honor those who have lost their battle with cancer, those who are still fighting and those who have won and are now cancer free. For over a decade, Sterling High School’s Peer Assistance and Leadership program (PALs) has played a major part in this ceremony. The PALs, with help from organizations at Sterling and Gentry, make sure the thousands of luminaria bags are prepared and ready to have the names placed on them by community volunteers. Then bright and early on the day of the event, Sterling PALs are at Royal Purple Raceway to place the luminarias around the track, readying them for the Ceremony of Light. This occurs at 9 p m., when the thousands of luminarias are lit, symbolizing the hope and perseverance everyone faces in this battle.

It’s not too late to honor a friend or loved one with a luminaria! They can be purchased at www.relayforlife.org/bayareatx. The minimum price for a white bag luminaria is $10 until March 31. After that date the minimum price is $15. Pink bags range from $25 - $49, fuchsia bags are $50 - $99, and purple bags are $100 and up.

This year’s Bay Area Relay for Life is Friday, April 7, 6 p.m., at Royal Purple Raceway, 2525 FM 505. Anyone wanting to register a team can do so online at www.relayforlife.org/bayareatx or by calling 800-227-2345.

Please help us light up the track!
