REL Interact Club to conduct a pet food, supplies drive

The civic-minded members of the Robert E. Lee High School Interact Club are sponsoring a pet food and supplies drive on Saturday Feb. 12 at the Tractor Supply store, 6202 Garth Road.

The “Love Your Pet Food Drive & Adoption,” will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Some of the items sought include dog and cat food, cat litter, collars, food bowls, toys, treats, and blankets and towels.

The drive benefits the City of Baytown Animal Shelter.

Since 1963, the Interact Club — now 80 members strong —has been an important part of the Baytown community, and they have the honors to prove it.

The upcoming pet food drive is just one of many community service projects that the REL Interact Club members perform. Other service projects include collected food for a local food bank, sending care packages to REL alumni serving in the military, raising money for a deaf school in Africa, participating in the “Rotary Books for the World” by collecting more than 50 cases of books, collecting school supplies for local students, volunteering to help for the Baytown Thanksgiving Community Dinner, participating in the annual Baytown Trash Off, Relay for Life and Special Olympics and visiting residents at a local retirement community — just to name a few.

In addition to serving the community, the REL Interact Club the official sponsor of the REL Red Ribbon Week to bring awareness of the effects of drugs and alcohol on the human body, and sponsoring the REL Freshmen Orientation for incoming students.

“These students give and give and give selflessly. I am truly amazed by their desire to help others,” said REL Interact Club Sponsor Brian Walenta. “They are not only determined to do well academically, but strive to help their community any way they can.”

Clearly, as far as civic service, the REL Interact Club is in an elite class.

For four consecutive years, the REL Interact Club has been awarded the Presidential Citation for Service from Rotary International.

Of the 12,600 Interact Clubs in the world, only 550 clubs received this award.

"It is our privilege to serve our school and the community in this way. As Interact Club members, we learn that true leadership is service to others," said Walenta.

Founded in 1963, the REL Interact Club is the oldest Interact Club in Texas.
