The rain held off just long enough for guests to tour Angie’s Garden at its recent dedication at Alamo Elementary School. The garden became a reality due to the combined efforts of ExxonMobil, Environmental Institute of Houston, Goose Creek CISD Education Foundation, Goose Creek CISD Nutrition Services, Kiwanis Club of Baytown, Keep Baytown Beautiful and numerous faculty, staff and student volunteers. Dedicated to the memory of former Alamo teacher Angie Watkins, who taught at Alamo from 2008 to 2013 and died last year from leukemia, it is not only a peaceful garden, but also an outdoor classroom where students plant and watch flowers and vegetables bloom and grow and butterflies emerge from chrysalises.

Steve Livingston, Alamo principal, welcomed guests, and Ruth Woodall, campus instructional specialist, who applied for grants from the Goose Creek CISD Education Foundation and from the Environmental Institute of Houston through UHCL, described Watkins’ impact on the students as well as the faculty.

“She was loved by her students and co-workers and always had a smile,” said Woodall.

Randal O’Brien, Goose Creek CISD superintendent, recognized donors. Connie Tilton from ExonMobil, Sheila Brown from the Environmental Institute of Houston, Don Bobo from the GCCISD Education Foundation, Amy George from the GCCISD Nutrition Services, Dave Jirrels from the Kiwanis Club of Baytown and Scott Sheley from Keep Baytown Beautiful spoke about their organizations’ contributions to the garden. Sheley presented Angie’s daughter Jessica Guidry with a vase of flowers, including tulips, Angie’s favorite flower.

Before a tour of Angie’s Garden and a reception, Jessica and husband Sean Guidry performed “I Can See Clearly Now” in honor of her mother.
