Goose Creek CISD crossing guard Cynthia Moore has helped thousands of children safely cross the street before and after school for 33 years.

Moore worked her last day on May 14 helping the kids at James Bowie Elementary School.

Moore said she first pursued the idea of becoming a crossing guard when she saw a woman in a crossing guard uniform at a store one day.

“Back then the uniforms were different than they are now,” Moore said. “I saw hers and didn’t recognize it and I thought I would ask her what she did. Little did I know it would be something I really wanted to get involved in.”

Moore talked to the woman about the job and liked the idea of getting involved with the community as a crossing guard.

Moore pursued her desire and in 1977, she took her first crossing guard job at San Jacinto Elementary School. She also worked at Lamar Elementary, Ashbel Smith Elementary, and finally her longest term of 30 years at James Bowie Elementary.
Moore was part of the crossing guard corps when it was still a branch of the Baytown Police Department and later after it was taken over by Goose Creek CISD’s security office.

She excelled at both places, her supervisor Sandra Garcia said.

“Cynthia has seen a lot in her 33 years of service with the BPD and GCCISD as a crossing guard,” Garcia said. “She has even devoted her time to extra work with other campuses and helping out at Stallworth Stadium with security. Her service and time here has been exceptional and will be truly missed.”

Moore is thankful for the time she served as a crossing guard, but is looking forward to spending some time with her recently retired husband.

“I thought I would do this until I couldn’t cross the street anymore,” Moore said. “But this is a good note to end on. I will miss all of the students and everyone I have worked with over the years, but I look forward to spending time with my family as well.”
