43rd annual ‘Battle of Baytown’ RSS, REL play for bragging rights

Football was in the spotlight Friday night as Robert E. Lee and Ross S. Sterling high schools hooked up for the 43rd annual “Battle of Baytown” at Stallworth Stadium.
The gridiron rivalry is meaningful both in athletic terms and in how much a part it is of community spirit.
“‘The Game’ is one of those lasting memories that holds classmates at Lee and Sterling together. For seniors, it can be a defining moment,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Toby York. “Simply put, The Game is for bragging rights in Baytown.”
The Ganders won Friday’s game, 35-27. Lee now holds a 26-15-2 series advantage.
Lee and Sterling first met in 1967, though it wasn’t much of a rivalry in those early years. Lee won the first four meetings, with the Rangers finally breaking the streak with a 20-19 victory in 1971.
Friday also marked the night when the owners of Community Toyota/Kia of Baytown gave away two new cars.
Since 2006, Roger and Kim Elswick, owners of the Community Toyota/Kia dealerships, have recognized the efforts of Goose Creek CISD juniors and seniors who had perfect attendance over the preceding year. These students are entered in a drawing for a new car. This year, the Elswicks added a second drawing for a free car for Goose Creek Memorial High School and Barbers Hill High School juniors and seniors who had perfect attendance over the preceding year.
At the Lee-Sterling game, Lee junior Mary Rambadadt won a 2009 Kia Rio. At the Goose Creek Memorial-Barbers Hill game, Goose Creek Memorial senior Karla Arellano won a 2010 Scion Xd.
On the gridiron, Goose Creek Memorial defeated Barbers Hill, 39-21.
