History is Not Only in the Past

This past weekend marked the culmination of the Lee College Regional History Day Competition. This year’s event, with the theme of “Turning Points in History,” showcased historical papers, websites, documentaries, performances, and exhibit projects where young historians presented their research and projects.

Participants delved into various historical topics, offering insightful perspectives and engaging narratives. The day celebrated the students' dedication to historical inquiry and fostered a sense of community and intellectual curiosity.

 

Students buzzed with excitement throughout Lee College as junior school and high school attendees explored exhibits and interacted with the presenters. Judges, educators, and parents alike were impressed by the depth of knowledge and creativity demonstrated by the students.

 

Those students placing first or second in the junior division categories were: Ananya Sood- EF Green, Ainsley Benoit- Cedar Bayou (Documentary), Ava Flood- Cedar Bayou (Exhibit), Maahi Singh- EF Green & Ava Westbay- Gentry (Paper), Jacob Mejia- EF Green (Performance), Arya Patel & Gabriella Martinez- EF Green (Website), Kenzie & Kollin Pinkerton- Gentry, Lucas Melcher & Micah Williams- EF Green (Group Documentary), Yashvir Singh Gill, Gabriel Ramirez, Jonathan Lewis, Annali Ramirez- EF Green, Austin Thomas & Brycen Gardiner- Baytown Junior (Group Exhibit), Cara Keiser, Lea Diaz, Amelia Breault- Gentry, Crisette Gardner, Chloe Allen, Mellony Blakeslee, & Serena Lanham- EF Green (Group Performance), and Anay Gupta & Manavendra Chouhan, Theertha Nair & Arpitha Sunilkmar- EF Green (Group Website).

 

Those students placing first or second in the senior division categories were: Ravleen Kaur Gill- GCM, Emmery Ripke- Sterling (Documentary), Rachel Currie- IMPACT (Exhibit), Freddy de la Rosa- Sterling (Paper), Hanna Coker- Sterling (Website), Gianni Del Rio & Jody Valerie Go Hiong, Joshua Camtugan, Noah Caban, & Alexa Banda- IMPACT (Group Documentary), Axel Moreno, Salvador, Bejar, Destiney Ramos, & Mateo Ortegon, Logan Ochoa & Giovanny Paz- GCM (Group Exhibit), and Karly Esquivel, Leighton Briggs, and Ace Ellis- Sterling, Shakuntala Bhowmick & Laila Cardona- IMPACT (Website).

 

These 51 GCCISD students are advancing to the state competition on April 20, 2024, at the University of Texas at Austin.
