Growing Giants Beyond the Classroom

As we move further into spring, there is a renewed sense of energy and excitement across Goose Creek CISD. This time of year brings meaningful opportunities for students to compete, perform, and represent their schools in ways that extend beyond the classroom. From athletics to fine arts, our students continue to demonstrate teamwork and pride in all they do.

Extracurricular activities play an important role in developing the whole child. Through athletics and fine arts programs, students build confidence and learn valuable life skills such as discipline and collaboration. These experiences help shape well-rounded individuals and create lasting connections to their schools and community.

Across the district, our spring athletic programs are in full swing, with students competing in soccer, tennis, track, golf, baseball, and softball. This season has already brought exciting moments of success. At Ross S. Sterling High School, the boys' basketball team advanced to the playoffs for the first time in nearly 40 years, a remarkable achievement that reflects the hard work and commitment of our student-athletes and coaches. Sterling boys and girls soccer, along with Goose Creek Memorial girls soccer, have also earned playoff spots. The Sterling boys’ soccer team captured a district championship for the first time since 1998, and we are proud to recognize two state qualifiers in girls powerlifting, one from Sterling and one from Lee.

Our fine arts programs are equally active this season, with students participating in UIL competitions, performances, and showcases. Concert and sight-reading evaluations are currently underway, offering students the opportunity to demonstrate their growth and musical excellence.

This spring also marks an important transition as our high schools prepare to enter new competitive districts for athletics and fine arts beginning next school year. Goose Creek Memorial and Ross S. Sterling High School football will compete in District 9-5A Division I, while Robert E. Lee High School football will compete in District 10-5A Division II.

These realignments, which occur every two years, are designed to create balanced competition among schools of similar size and will also place all high school fine arts programs at the 5A level. For Goose Creek Memorial in particular, this shift represents a positive change, moving from a 6A district to a 5A alignment that better reflects the campus’s size and provides new opportunities for competitive success. In volleyball and basketball, all three high schools will compete together in District 19, creating additional opportunities for local competition and continued rivalry.

As we look ahead, I am grateful for the continued commitment of our Goose Creek community. Together, we will continue providing opportunities that allow every student to grow and succeed.
