Country star Walker plays surprise concert at Goose Creek Memorial
When students at Goose Creek Memorial High School got up Tuesday morning, they had no idea they were going to a private concert from multi-platinum selling country star Clay Walker.
The country star’s visit was kept a big secret until the last minute. Goose Creek Memorial Principal Al Richard tried to keep Walker’s surprise appearance secret by not announcing the performer and telling students the concert is Wednesday. But Walker made the appearance public knowledge on his Twitter site Friday, so some knew what was coming.
But for most, it was a grand surprise — thanks to the cheerleaders of Goose Creek Memorial High School.
Walker’s concert was the top prize in Houston radio station FM 93Q’s 2009 Gridiron Invasion cheer contest. Competing against cheer squads across the greater Houston area, the Goose Creek Memorial cheerleaders wrote and performed a personalized 93Q Morning Zoo cheer to compete in the Gridiron Invasion competition.
Then, folks got to vote via the Internet for the best original cheer, and the Patriot cheerleaders won the contest and free concert.
“The student body of GCM never ceases to amaze me. They greeted Clay Walker and the 93Q deejays with enthusiasm, pride, and class,” said GCM Principal Al Richard.
“Everyone from Clay's group and the radio people commented that this was the best school concert they had ever been a part of. The students enjoyed their afternoon. It was a great reward for our cheerleaders and student body to be entertained by such a country music superstar.”
Since 1993, the Beaumont native has produced a constant string of hit singles on the country music.
Walker has released a total of 10 albums, including a Greatest Hits package and an album of Christmas music.
