Veronica Phillips

Veronica Phillips earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Mississippi State University in Starkville, MS. She holds a Master of Science in Educational Leadership from Concordia University, where she is also a doctoral candidate.

She began her teaching career at Robert E. Lee High School where she taught for 16 years in the subject areas of Theatre Arts, Peer Assistance and Leadership (PALs), Methods of Academic and Personal Success (MAPS), and Advancement via Individual Determination (AVID). Mrs. Phillips currently serves as the AVID Coordinator at Edward Franklin Green Junior School and looks forward to serving as an AVID National Staff Developer for Summer Institute 2022.

In 2017, She spent 1 year developing a successful AVID program at Worthing High School in Houston Independent School District. After 18 years of teaching, her philosophy for education remains the same “do all you can to close the academic achievement gap for all students”. She is proud to see her students excel, but her greatest joy is seeing her former students become educators and work with her.

Although a native of Bassfield, Mississippi, she is proud to make Houston her home where she lives with her husband, James and dog, Shiloh.

"Black History Month is a celebration of the progression of African Americans. This is important to me because it shows how far we have come and how much further we must go. It helps us to keep the mindset that we can overcome challenges and achieve anything we put our minds to." - Veronica Phillips
