
Derek Haywood
Giant Alumnus of the Month
Our Giant Alumnus of the Month for March 2023 is Derek Haywood. Derek graduated from Sterling High School in 1988 after attending Cedar Bayou Junior and Alamo Elementary. After high school, he attended Lee College and McNeese State University, where he played basketball; he is in the Lee College Hall of Fame for outstanding academic, athletic, and community leadership. Mr. Haywood has experienced great success at Chevron-Phillips. He was given the Keystone Award for those who provide innovative processes to reduce company expenditures and increase revenue. He is currently a project execution manager responsible for a project portfolio of 1.5 billion dollars.
Mr. Haywood has been an inspiration by dedicating his time to our community. He served on the 2008 Citizen’s Bond Advisory Committee and is currently on the 2023 CBAC. In the past, he was an Education Foundation board member and helped to award innovative teaching grants. In addition, with his athletic background, Derek has donated his talent to the community by serving as an AAU basketball coach. A family man, Mr. Haywood, is married to Tracy, the dean at Pumphrey Elementary Early Learning Academy. They have two children, Kendall, who just graduated from the University of Houston, where she played volleyball. She is getting her master’s degree at the University of Central Arkansas and played volleyball last year. And their son, Emerson, plays football at the University of Incarnate Word.
