GCCISD Board approves elementary, junior school rezoning plans; high school boundaries remain same

• At its March 28 meeting, the Goose Creek CISD Board of Trustees approved new school boundaries for elementary and junior school students beginning with the 2011-12 school year.

Of all the rezoning options on the table, the Board chose the ones that moved the fewest students.

Rezoning was made necessary because of current overcrowding at many Goose Creek CISD schools and student enrollment projections.

Also at the meeting, the Board voted to allow “grandfathering” of some elementary and junior school students who will be zoned to a different campus next year.

Some students currently in fourth grade and seventh grade will have the opportunity to remain at their present campus for their fifth-grade and eight-grade years upon parent request.

However, certain provisions have to be followed:

Siblings of current fourth-graders and seventh-graders will be allowed to attend school with their siblings on a “continuous” basis. (Continuous basis is defined as having two or more siblings enrolled at the same time in the same elementary or junior school.) Current Elementary

Parents must also agree to provide transportation for these students.

Also, any elementary or junior school student residing in the same residence which has previously been rezoned twice (beginning with the 2007-08 school year) will be allowed to remain at their current school upon parent request.

However, parents of these students must provide proof of residence for years previously rezoned (electric or gas bill), and parents will need to provide their child’s transportation.

The district is sending a letter to parents of affected students explaining the provisions for grandfathering, including a timeline for parent requests.
