Former REL Gander head coach Dick Olin recalls the intensity of the Lee -Sterling rivalry, but he never lost sight of the fact that their team faced a rival every Friday night.

Getting Past the Rivalry Important for Olin

As excitement builds in anticipation of the 50th game between the Robert E. Lee High School Ganders and the Ross S. Sterling Rangers September 2, many former players, coaches and fans remember the rivalry of past games. Dick Olin led the Ganders for 17 of those games as head football coach at Robert E. Lee High School and has fond memories about his time as a Gander coach.

“We had a great staff and great kids,” said Olin. “In 1992, my first year at Lee, we went 0-10. Coaches who go 0-10 don’t get to be coaches too long. I told Marvin Guy, the athletic director, that we were not going to win a game, but we would get better if I was given a chance. We played Sterling that year, and they beat us.”
