
Eric Groce
Giant Alumnus of the Month
Our Giant Alumnus of the Month for April 2023 is Dr. Eric Groce. Dr. Groce graduated from Sterling High School in 1983 after attending Austin Elementary and Cedar Bayou Junior School. He is a former Goose Creek CISD teacher. He taught at Highlands Elementary from 1990-1992 and Harlem Elementary from 1992-1994. Now, he works as a professor at Appalachian State University in North Carolina teaching future elementary educators. He received an Emmy Award for writing and producing the documentary "Papa Said, We Should Never Forget," a true story of World War II's unlikeliest heroes.
Dr. Groce is the author of over 40 publications and has given over 60 regional, national, and international presentations. His most famous book is "The Canteen: Sacrifice and Community during World War II," which is based on the citizens of North Platte, Nebraska, and their contribution to aid in the war effort. Before receiving his Giant of the Month award, Dr. Groce participated in an interview with Sterling High School AVID students to discuss his success as an educator and author.
