Preparing for the 2015-2016 School Year
Summer is passing all too quickly, so I hope you are setting aside some time for yourself to do whatever your heart desires before the busy school year begins.

Obrien photo A group with little free time is our Board of Trustees, whose members generously donate their time to serving our district year-round. We recently welcomed four new Board members – Gigi Cockrell, Pete Pape, Al Richard and Jessica Woods. These new members recently participated in a Board Orientation session to familiarize them with the departments and employees with specific roles in our district. Jenice Coffey is serving as president for the 2015-2016 school year. Other officers are Richard, vice president; Pape, secretary and Woods, assistant secretary. Agustin Loredo III and Howard Sampson, along with Cockrell, complete the Board. We thank them for their willingness to serve and their dedication to the success of our students and staff.

The big ticket change in buildings this coming year will be IMPACT Early College High School (ECHS), which has been operating in temporary facilities since its inception in 2009. If you have not driven down Market Street by Robert E. Lee High School, please take the opportunity to get a sneak peek prior to the opening of school.

Also, we have received the good news that IMPACT ECHS has been awarded a bronze medal in the 2015 Best High Schools rankings by U.S. News and World Report. More than 21,000 schools across the nation were reviewed, based on their students’ performance on the math and reading portions of state proficiency tests as benchmarks as well as their college-readiness performance for the 2012-2013 school year.

Congratulations to IMPACT ECHS on this prestigious award! This is just another example of excellence in Goose Creek CISD.

You may be aware that we are implementing an eight-period day at our three traditional high schools to provide more flexibility in student scheduling and to allow students to achieve endorsements as well as graduate with the distinguished level of achievement. More information about the schedule is posted on our website. The new schedule alternates days that students attend certain class periods, so it is important that you encourage students to attend school every day so they don’t miss out on classroom instruction.

Administrative personnel have been working throughout the summer with our strategic plan in conjunction with our Board members and their vision and goals for the district to ensure that the upcoming school year will be the best ever. Teachers have attended trainings and workshops to help them enhance their classroom instruction. Everyone is focused on student success, and I appreciate the effort, collaboration and planning that I see in preparation for the 2015-2016 school year.

As always, we will continue to keep you informed about what’s happening in our district. Enjoy the last few weeks of the summer!
