New Year Brings Excitement
Welcome to 2015! A new year always brings excitement as many of us try not to break our New Year’s resolutions in the first few days of January. It is also invigorating to return to work and school after the break and to anticipate what 2015 holds for us and for Goose Creek CISD. While I worked on my dissertation for my doctoral degree, I did enjoy some time with friends and family, including a fishing trip and a duck hunting expedition with Blast & Cast Men’s Ministry in Rockport, Texas. I hope you were able to relax and enjoy some time off as well. The second semester always seems fast and furious, so I hope you have approached it with enthusiasm.

Obrien photo The first activity that comes to mind for 2015 is the opportunity to recognize seven people who generously devote their time and energy to ensure that Goose Creek CISD runs smoothly and that we focus on the success of our students and staff. January has been designated as School Board Appreciation Month by the Texas Association of School Boards, and it is quite fitting that the theme is “A Work of Heart.” We appreciate our Goose Creek CISD Board of Trustees – Jimmy Smith, president; Agustin Loredo III, vice president; Vicky Melo, secretary; Ken Martin, assistant secretary and Daniel Blackford, Jenice Coffey and Howard Sampson—and recognize the many sacrifices they make to serve our district. Our schools have planned some surprises for them to show their gratitude for all they do for our district. Please take a moment to thank our Board members for their dedication to Goose Creek CISD in person, if you know them or see them out and about, or via email.

The 2013 Construction Bond is continuing to progress with design and development underway for a new Transportation Facility and Data Technology Center. Construction for the expansion of our fastest growing high school, Goose Creek Memorial, will begin this spring. The conversion of the Stuart Career Center to incorporate the Kilgore Center (also formerly Alamo Elementary) into a conceptual Career and Technology High School is slated for early spring as well.

If you drive down Market Street, you will notice the progress on the new IMPACT Early College High School. IMPACT is on schedule and on budget with a projected completion date of August 2015—just in time for the 2015-2016 school year.

We are proud to announce that due to the demonstration of consistent academic progress over the past three years, no Goose Creek CISD campus is being monitored by the Texas Education Agency. As you may remember, Goose Creek CISD and all campuses received “Met Standard” ratings, which are the highest ratings given by TEA for 2014. Thanks to all our faculty and staff members as well as our students for their commitment to excellence.

As the semester unfolds, please take the opportunity to enjoy some of the many activities throughout the district, such as fine arts programs, sporting events and Career Nights. Our goal is to increase parental and community involvement in our schools, as we believe that partnership will benefit our students’ success.

I hope you are off to a great start in 2015 and look forward to the great things that are in store!
