Lori Alexander, director of the Stars and JV Sapphires at Ross S. Sterling High School, was selected as one of three finalists for the Texas Dance Educators Association (TDEA) Director of the Year.
A product of Goose Creek CISD schools, Alexander attended Crockett Elementary and Gentry Junior School, graduating from Robert E. Lee High School. She was active in the marching band and color guard, and she graduated ninth in her class. She began her dance career at the age of 3 at Cheryl’s Dance Studio, later joining the competition team and serving as an assistant instructor. After graduating from Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, where she taught at a local dance studio, she returned to Baytown as assistant director of the Sterling Stars for three years.
Named head director of the national award-winning J. Frank Dobie High School Lariaettes Drill Team and the JV Lassos Dance Team in 2008, Alexander doubled the size of the dance department to more than 400 students during her nine years there. She had the honor of designing the team’s current field uniform with a vintage flair, reflecting the team’s 50-year history. Her team danced in the pregame and halftime shows of Super Bowl LI with Lady Gaga and over the years won numerous local, state and national competition awards.
Three years ago, Alexander returned to Baytown as the Sterling Stars and JV Sapphires director and campus sponsor for the Good Sportsmanship League. Hoping to build a fulltime dance department at the junior school level, she teaches one period a day at Gentry Junior School.
Alexander is a 15-year member of TDEA and has served as a convention assistant and a volunteer on several committees. In addition, she enjoys judging competitions with the American Dance/Drill Team and choreographing for local drill teams. Her daughters are 5 and 2, and they love being at the school and at games with her “dance girls.”
“When I was notified that I was selected as one of three finalists for the 2020 Texas Dance Educators Association Director of the Year, I was shocked, honored and humbled. This nomination and recognition from my peers and mentors in my field meant so much, and it reignited a fire inside of me that God has me where I am meant to be, doing what I am supposed to be doing. Regardless of winning or losing, being nominated is the true honor as we are surrounded by so many amazing directors and fellow dance educators, and to be recognized for my hard work, passion and leadership inspires me to work harder and continue to grow as an educator and dancer,” Alexander said.
